For the past few days, we noticed that there’s a flurry of activities on the cricket ground in our neighourhood. There were people around mending the pitch, putting up tents and spotlights. I didn’t notice the spotlights initially, but once they started to do the test run, the whole place was lighted like a mini stadium.
Which makes us in the neighbourhood wonders, why the spotlights? As of now, it was used mainly for clubs and schools, and only used in the days. Why would there be any need for spotlights and camera towers? Anything of significance coming to town? Until one day when we’re coming home from work only to be greeted by a massive traffic jam.
We stopped at our local mamak to have dinner and surprised that they’re showing cricket on the big screen. Only then we found out that the cricket ground is home to the DLF Cup, a tri-series championship with West Indies, Australia and India. And the plus point is that it’s their national team competing for it. Not just their reserves or youths but the full fledge team.
Imagine Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Watson playing their best internationals in your neighbourhood. To those uninitiated, those mentioned are akin to Beckham, Ronaldo & Zidane in football world. Also, its like living near The Oval plus the event is beamed via satellite around the world.
The event has catapulted our neighbourhood to international stardom. Prior to this, the only claim to fame that we have internationally was the close proximity to the Bukit Jalil sports complex, and locally was the local golf club with two HUGE golf balls adorning the entrance to the area. About time to change it to cricket balls & wickets then?
